Sure, thrift shopping taught my daughter about environmentalism and reusing clothes. But it turned out to be about so much more than that. When she was nine, she found a vintage jacket with a faded name tag sewn inside. She asked who the person was, and I had to explain that they were likely someone's grandparent, now gone, and the jacket had outlived them. That moment opened a door to conversations I wasn't ready for.
Since then, every trip to the thrift store has become a quiet classroom. She sees wedding dresses that never got worn, baby shoes that were outgrown too fast, and old textbooks with notes in the margins from students who are now adults. She asks why someone would donate a perfectly good winter coat. I tell her that sometimes people lose their homes or have to move quickly. She doesn't just learn about waste. She learns about loss, about change, about the fact that life is not always fair.
Thrifting has also taught her that value is not the same as price. She finds a scratched-up lamp and sees beauty in its history. She picks a sweater with a small hole and decides to fix it instead of tossing it. These are not lessons from a textbook. They come from handling the actual stuff of other people's lives. It has made her more patient, more curious, and a lot less afraid of the messy, complicated parts of being human.
