Raising engaged citizens does not happen in schools alone. It starts at home.
Civic education has become a familiar talking point in policy debates, with proposals to expand civics curricula, strengthen history requirements, and revive courses on government. These efforts matter, but they miss a quieter force that shapes how young people understand their place in public life: the example set by parents.
Children learn citizenship long before they enter a classroom. They watch how adults treat neighbors, whether household rules are explained or simply imposed, and how disagreements are handled at the dinner table. A family that volunteers together, follows local issues, and talks openly about public problems teaches lessons no textbook can replicate.
Civic parenting does not require formal expertise. It can mean taking a child to a town meeting, discussing why voting matters, or showing how a community garden gets organized. Small habits accumulate into a disposition, a sense that public life is something ordinary people participate in rather than something done to them by distant institutions.
Schools remain essential partners in this work, but they cannot carry it alone. When families treat civic involvement as a lived practice rather than an abstract requirement, young people grow up seeing participation as normal. That foundation is harder to build later, and far more durable when it begins early.
