OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently shared what he called a practical parenting hack involving ChatGPT, but the suggestion quickly sparked criticism online. In a post on social media, Altman said parents could use the AI chatbot to help settle arguments with their children by having both sides present their case to the tool, which would then offer a neutral verdict. He framed it as a way to reduce emotional tension and teach kids how to articulate their reasoning.
The response was mixed, to say the least. While some parents found the idea creative, many pointed out a worrying flaw: the potential for children to rely on an AI for emotional validation rather than learning to resolve conflicts through direct communication with a parent. One user called the hack "terrible," arguing that it outsources core parenting responsibilities to a machine and could normalize the idea that a third-party algorithm should mediate family disputes.
Others raised privacy concerns, noting that children might share sensitive personal information with a chatbot without understanding how that data is stored or used. Altman has not responded to the criticism directly, but the debate highlights the growing tension around integrating AI into everyday family life. For now, the consensus among many commenters seems to be that while ChatGPT can be a useful tool, it shouldn't replace human judgment in parenting.
