Parenting Doesn't End When College Begins

With the back of both of our cars packed to the brim, my wife and I had the bittersweet duty of dropping our oldest child off for college.

The campus was buzzing with nervous energy. Families hauled boxes and bedding across manicured lawns while students tried to look confident about a future they could not yet picture. We were no different. We carried suitcases, offered advice nobody asked for, and lingered a little too long in the doorway of a dorm room that suddenly felt very small.

Then came the moment we had prepared for and dreaded in equal measure. The last hug. The forced smile. The walk back to the car without turning around, because turning around would have undone us both.

People describe this as letting go, but that phrase never sat right with me. We did not let go of our child that day. We simply changed how we hold on. The daily routines disappeared, but the attention did not. We still watch the weather where they live. We still notice the time difference before sending a text. We still worry, though we try to worry quietly.

Parenting does not stop at the edge of a campus. It shifts from managing to trusting, from directing to supporting, from being the voice that answers every question to the voice that waits to be asked. That first day of college marked the start of a new kind of closeness, one built on distance and grown through patience.

The letting go process begins there, but the love and the work of parenting continue long after the car pulls away.
