I underestimated what it would take to be a mom. There's no downtime.

I underestimated what it would take to be a mom. There's no downtime.

A growing body of research is validating what many mothers have long felt but struggled to articulate: the job of parenting is not just physically exhausting, but mentally and emotionally relentless. A recent survey of over 2,000 mothers found that nearly 70 percent reported feeling that they had "no real downtime" during the day, even when their children were asleep or occupied.

"I assumed being a mom would be like a 'second shift,' but I underestimated the mental and emotional labor," said one participant. "There is no downtime to being a parent. Your brain is always running a background task."

Experts are now distinguishing between the physical work of childcare and the invisible cognitive load that mothers carry. This includes planning meals, scheduling appointments, managing school communications, tracking emotional well-being, and constantly anticipating the next need. Unlike a job, where you can clock out, parenting offers no such boundary.

The study highlights that this constant state of alertness contributes to higher rates of burnout, anxiety, and depression among mothers compared to fathers. Researchers argue that society often overlooks this "third shift" of mental management, leaving women to feel isolated in their exhaustion. The findings call for a broader conversation about shared parental responsibility and realistic expectations, rather than the myth of the "supermom."
