Sam Altman’s ‘cool use case’ for ChatGPT sparks debate among parents online, with many slamming the idea

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has ignited a firestorm of discussion online after proposing a unique way for parents to use ChatGPT. In a recent post, Altman described the idea as a "cool use case," but the suggestion has drawn sharp criticism from many parents who find the concept troubling.

Altman suggested that parents could use the AI chatbot to generate responses to their children's endless questions. The idea, which he framed as a time-saving tool, would allow parents to quickly produce detailed answers without having to think them up themselves. However, the reaction was swift and largely negative. Many parents slammed the concept, arguing that outsourcing curiosity to a machine undermines the natural bonding that happens through conversation.

Critics pointed out that children ask questions not just for information, but for connection and reassurance. One parent wrote that the suggestion reduces parenting to a transactional exchange, stripping away the warmth and spontaneity that comes from a child hearing their own parent explain the world. Others raised concerns about accuracy, noting that AI can provide confident but incorrect answers, which could mislead a young mind.

While some saw the tool as a helpful assistant for exhausted parents, the overwhelming sentiment was that it misses the point of parenting. The debate highlights a growing tension between embracing new technology and preserving human interaction in family life. Altman has not yet responded to the backlash.
