The sight of a bicycle once filled me with a complex mix of nostalgia and deep-seated aversion. As a former professional cyclist, I had sworn off the sport, my retirement built on a foundation of physical agony and the relentless mental grind that elite competition demands. I had neatly packed away the lycra, the cleats, and the memories, believing I was protecting myself by leaving that world behind for good.

All that changed when my son discovered two wheels. Watching his pure, unfiltered joy as he learned to balance, then to pedal, then to race down our street, was a revelation. His dream was blossoming in the very arena I had forsaken. My instinct was to shield him—to steer him away from the potential for the same heartbreak and hardship I knew so intimately.

Yet, in his pursuit, I began to see with new eyes. I witnessed not just the risk of pain, but the profound lessons in resilience, the simple thrill of speed, and the quiet confidence earned through personal achievement. Letting him chase this dream forced me to untangle my own history from his future. It taught me that parenting isn't about building a pain-free path for our children, but about having the courage to watch them navigate their own, equipped with our support, not our fear. In handing him a helmet and cheering from the roadside, I wasn't just reintroducing a sport; I was making peace with my own past.
