Twenty-seven year old nurse Ashley Morrison has never had kids before. But now she's pregnant with her first baby, and she's already thinking about all the ways she plans to parent differently than her own parents did.
Morrison grew up in a household where yelling was the default form of communication. She says her mother and father both carried unresolved pain from their own childhoods, and that pain trickled down in ways neither of them seemed to notice. Now, with her first child on the way, Morrison is convinced she can stop that pattern cold.
She has been reading books on attachment theory. She has listened to podcasts about gentle parenting. She has practiced breathing exercises for moments when frustration builds. She told friends she will not repeat the cycle, no matter how tired she gets or how loud her toddler screams in the grocery store.
Experts who study family systems say the desire to break cycles is common, but the work is harder than most people expect. Stress, sleep deprivation, and old triggers can pull even the most determined parent back into familiar habits. Awareness helps, but it does not erase years of learned behavior overnight.
Morrison knows this. She also knows she might fail sometimes. Still, she says she would rather try and stumble than pass down the same wounds without a fight. Her baby is due in the spring.
