Dr. Sheryl Ziegler breaks down the neurological fireworks happening inside your 10-to-13-year-old. It is not just attitude or hormones. The adolescent brain is actually rewiring itself, and that process makes tweens naturally argumentative, moody, and prone to rolling their eyes.
The prefrontal cortex, which handles impulse control and rational decision-making, is still under construction. Meanwhile, the amygdala, the emotional center, is working overtime. This mismatch means your tween feels things intensely but cannot always regulate their reactions. They might snap at you for asking about homework because their brain interprets the question as a threat rather than a simple inquiry.
Ziegler also points out that tweens are wired to push away from parents. It is a survival instinct. They need to establish their own identity, and the easiest way to do that is to disagree with you. They are not trying to be cruel. They are practicing independence. The eye rolls and slammed doors are actually signs of healthy development, even if they feel like personal attacks.
The good news is that this phase is temporary. The bad news is that it lasts a few years. Ziegler advises parents to stay calm, pick their battles, and remember that the tween who hates you today might be the one who needs you tomorrow. The brain is just doing its job. You are doing yours by surviving it.
