Why Children Stop Sharing When Every Talk Feels Like an Interrogation

It is one of the shortest answers a child can give, and one of the easiest for adults to ignore. How was school? Nothing. What happened today? Nothing. Why are you upset? Nothing.

Sometimes a child truly has nothing to say. Other times, that single word marks the end of a conversation they no longer feel safe having. When every attempt to share is met with more questions, advice, correction or judgment, a child learns that silence is simpler. The result is not that their problems disappear. They simply stop bringing those problems home.

According to Dr. Sugami Ramesh, a senior clinical psychologist at Apollo Hospital in Bengaluru, children need room to express themselves without feeling constantly questioned or controlled. Emotional safety matters more than quick fixes. A child who feels interrogated will close up, while a child who feels heard will keep talking.

Patient listening does not mean staying silent forever. It means letting a child finish before offering solutions. It means asking open questions instead of firing a list of them. It means reacting with calm rather than alarm. Over time, these small choices build trust.

The goal is not to solve every problem at the dinner table. It is to keep the door open so children know they can walk through it when they need to.
