Parenting expert Bethany Braun-Silva says many mothers are running on empty, and the pressure to do it all often leads to deep exhaustion. Burnout in moms is not just about being tired. It can show up as irritability, feeling numb, or a sense that nothing they do is good enough. Braun-Silva offers a few straightforward tips for friends and family who want to help.
First, skip the advice. A tired mom does not need a list of what she should do differently. Instead, offer specific help. Say something like "I am going to the store, what can I pick up for you?" or "I will watch the kids for two hours on Saturday." Vague offers like "let me know if you need anything" often go unused because she is too overwhelmed to ask.
Second, listen without fixing. Let her vent about the hard day without jumping in with solutions. Sometimes just saying "that sounds really hard" is more helpful than ten tips on time management.
Third, check in on her basic needs. A mom in burnout often skips meals, skips sleep, and skips showers. A gift card for a grocery delivery or a home-cooked meal dropped off without a long visit can mean more than a pep talk.
Finally, remind her that she does not have to be perfect. Braun-Silva emphasizes that small, consistent acts of support are what truly make a difference. A text that says "I see you working hard" can be a lifeline. The goal is not to fix everything, but to let her know she is not alone.
