Do you feel pressure to be your child's parent, therapist, coach, tutor, chef, and best friend all rolled into one? If so, you might be what experts are calling an "everything bagel parent" -- a term gaining traction among child development specialists to describe modern moms and dads who try to cover every possible need their child might have.
The concept draws a direct line to the popular bagel flavor loaded with poppy seeds, sesame seeds, garlic, onion, and salt. In parenting terms, it means layering on every role and responsibility imaginable, often at the expense of the parent's own well-being and the child's independence.
Child psychologists say this trend has been building for years, fueled by social media comparisons, competitive school cultures, and a genuine desire to give children every advantage. But the result can be exhaustion for parents and a lack of resilience in kids who never learn to handle disappointment or solve problems on their own.
Experts warn that the everything bagel parent often struggles with setting boundaries. They may feel guilty saying no to extra activities, mediating every playground dispute, or stepping in when a teacher gives a tough grade. Over time, this can create children who expect constant support and struggle with self-reliance.
The solution, according to family therapists, is not to abandon involvement but to pick a few key ingredients. Focus on being a consistent, loving presence rather than a one-person support system. Let children fail sometimes. Let them get bored. And most importantly, let yourself off the hook. You do not have to be everything to your child. Sometimes a plain bagel is just fine.
