Dogs are getting more love and attention than ever, but experts say too much of a good thing may come with hidden costs. Millennials and Gen Z owners have embraced a "gentle parenting" approach with their pets, treating them less like animals and more like furry children. While the intention is kind, behaviorists warn that this style can actually harm a dog's mental health and lead to serious behavioral issues.
The idea sounds nice: no yelling, no punishment, just positive reinforcement and understanding. But dogs are not small humans. They need clear boundaries, consistent rules, and a leader they can trust. When owners avoid setting limits, dogs can become anxious, confused, and even aggressive. A dog that never hears the word "no" may struggle with basic obedience or develop separation anxiety because it was never taught how to be alone.
Veterinarians and trainers report a rise in dogs that refuse to walk on a leash, growl when told to move off the couch, or panic when left at daycare. These problems often stem from owners who prioritize their dog's feelings over their safety and well-being. Gentle parenting in dogs can backfire when it means avoiding necessary corrections or routines that provide structure.
The solution is not to go back to harsh training methods. It is to find a balance between kindness and leadership. Dogs thrive when they know what is expected of them. A firm but fair approach, with clear rules and plenty of positive reinforcement, creates a confident and calm pet. Love alone is not enough. Dogs need guidance too.
