Comedian and radio host Geoff Norcott is not here to tell you that parenting is a pristine, polite affair. In fact, he is openly admitting that he drops the "Big Three" swear words in front of his children. But before you judge him as a reckless influence, he wants to clarify that his approach is less about being crude and more about being real.
Norcott argues that a total ban on profanity creates an unrealistic standard. Kids are going to hear these words eventually, whether on the playground or in the schoolyard. By pretending they do not exist, parents lose the chance to teach context. He points out that the real lesson is not about the words themselves, but about when they are appropriate. A word muttered under your breath after stubbing your toe is different from shouting it at a teacher.
He also admits that the effort to censor himself is exhausting. Trying to swap every strong word for a silly substitute often sounds more ridiculous than just saying the actual word. The goal, he says, is to show that language has power, but that power is about intent. He is not advocating for screaming at your kids or using language to hurt them. He is simply saying that a little honesty about the fact that adults sometimes get frustrated goes a long way. It teaches kids that you can be angry, express it, and still move on without it becoming a family crisis. In his house, the words are not the enemy; the meaning behind them is what matters.
