Child psychologist Dr. Becky Kennedy has a message for parents who worry about raising confident kids: the goal is not what you think it is. In her work with families, she challenges the common assumption that confidence means feeling good about yourself. Instead, she offers a different definition. "Confidence isn't feeling good," she says. "Confidence is self-trust."
That shift in language changes everything about how parents approach their children's struggles. When a child fails a test, fights with a friend, or freezes during a presentation, the instinct is often to restore good feelings as quickly as possible. Praise, reassurance, and distraction become the tools of choice. But according to this view, those tools can actually get in the way. They teach children that uncomfortable feelings are problems to be fixed from the outside, not experiences they can move through on their own.
Self-trust develops when kids learn that they can survive hard moments. It grows when a parent says, "That was really tough, and you got through it," rather than "Don't worry, you're great at everything." The first response acknowledges the difficulty and credits the child. The second erases the struggle and hands the credit to someone else.
This approach does not mean leaving children alone with big emotions. It means staying close while trusting them to do the work. Over time, that trust becomes internal. Kids who believe they can handle disappointment, failure, and uncertainty carry a quiet steadiness that looks different from constant cheerfulness. It looks like resilience. And it starts with a simple reframe: confidence is not a feeling you give your child. It is a belief they build, one hard moment at a time.
