Parents of teenagers are more stressed than ever - and here's how to get through it

A new report has revealed that parents of teenagers are experiencing higher levels of stress than almost any other demographic in the UK. The findings, drawn from a large-scale survey on mental health and daily pressures, show that the strain of raising adolescents has reached a tipping point. Experts point to a perfect storm of factors: social media anxiety, academic pressure, rising costs of living, and the lingering effects of the pandemic on young people's social development.

Many parents describe feeling isolated and unprepared for the emotional rollercoaster of the teenage years. Unlike the challenges of raising younger children, which often involve physical exhaustion, parenting teens requires constant emotional availability and negotiation. Arguments over screen time, homework, and curfews are common, but the deeper worry is often about mental health. One in three parents of teens reported feeling overwhelmed on a weekly basis, and many said they struggled to find advice that actually applied to their situation.

So how do you get through it without burning out? Psychologists recommend shifting from a control-based approach to a connection-based one. Instead of trying to enforce strict rules, they suggest setting clear boundaries while also validating the teen's perspective. Regular, low-pressure conversations - even just five minutes a day without a phone in hand - can rebuild trust. Parents are also urged to prioritise their own wellbeing. Joining a local parent support group or simply admitting to friends that you're struggling can make a huge difference. The key, experts say, is to stop aiming for perfection and start aiming for resilience - both for your teen and for yourself.
