My son is studying abroad in Spain this year; I'm struggling to let go

The suitcase is zipped, the flight is booked, and my son is embarking on a life-changing chapter studying abroad in Spain. While I am immensely proud and excited for him, I am simultaneously navigating the complex emotions of letting go. This isn't just a semester away at a nearby college; it’s his first true venture into independence, an ocean away.

My mind races with quiet worries. Did I teach him enough? Not just the practicalities of laundry or budgeting, but the deeper lessons: how to navigate disappointment, to advocate for himself in a foreign language, and to find comfort in his own company. The house feels different already, marked by an unfamiliar quiet where his presence used to be.

This experience, I am learning, is a rite of passage for parents as much as for students. It requires a conscious shift from manager to consultant, from daily protector to distant cheerleader. The cord isn't cut, but it is stretched across continents, trusting that the foundation built over eighteen years is strong enough to support him. Letting go is an act of faith—in him, in the journey, and in the resilient bond that distance cannot diminish. His adventure in Spain is, in many ways, the beginning of my own.
