Matthew McConaughey says parents should let kids take measured risks instead of protecting them from every setback.
The actor shared his thoughts on raising children during a recent public appearance, arguing that shielding young people from every difficulty can leave them unprepared for adult life. He said small failures and minor injuries are part of how children learn to judge situations for themselves.
McConaughey explained that he and his wife, Camila Alves, try to give their three children room to make mistakes. He described moments when he has stepped back rather than stepping in, noting that a scraped knee or a lost game can teach more than a warning from a parent.
He added that confidence does not come from being told everything will be fine. It comes from handling something hard and discovering you can survive it. According to him, parents who remove every obstacle may unintentionally send the message that their kids are not capable.
The comments echo a broader debate about overprotective parenting, sometimes called helicopter parenting, which researchers have linked to higher anxiety and lower independence in young adults. McConaughey said the goal is not to ignore safety but to distinguish between real danger and ordinary struggle.
He encouraged parents to ask themselves whether they are protecting their child or simply easing their own worry. Letting a kid climb the tree, walk to a friend's house, or lose a competition, he said, builds resilience that no lecture can provide.
