Parental stress is often treated as a badge of honor, but psychologist and mother Juli Fraga argues it shouldn't be. "Stress isn't a siren call to 'suck it up,' or an invitation to embrace perfectionism," she notes. Instead, she identifies five key practices that can lower anxiety and create a calmer household, calling it "a win for the entire family."
Firstly, Fraga emphasizes setting compassionate boundaries. This means saying "no" to non-essential demands to protect family time and personal energy. Secondly, she highlights the importance of self-compassion, urging parents to quiet their inner critic and treat themselves with the same kindness they offer their children.
Third, less-stressed parents prioritize connection over correction. They focus on understanding their child's feelings behind a behavior before reacting. Fourth, they build micro-moments of rest into their day, such as taking five deep breaths or enjoying a quiet cup of tea, to prevent burnout.
Finally, Fraga advises parents to embrace "good enough." Letting go of unrealistic standards for a clean home or Pinterest-worthy activities reduces pressure on everyone. By integrating these mindful shifts, parents can foster a more resilient and peaceful family environment.
