How to Navigate Toxic Masculinity When Raising Young Boys

Experts are highlighting a growing "crisis of connection" among young boys, who are increasingly struggling to form meaningful friendships in today's society. This challenge often intersects with outdated notions of masculinity that discourage emotional expression.

Developmental psychologist Niobe Way, author of "Rebels With a Cause," and author Carlos Whitaker, of "Reconnected," emphasize that the root of this issue lies in societal pressures that isolate boys. They point out that from a young age, boys are subtly steered away from deep, empathetic friendships in favor of a more stoic, independent ideal.

Their advice for parents and role models focuses on active intervention. This involves consciously teaching and valuing so-called "soft skills," such as empathy, vulnerability, and communication. Adults can help by encouraging boys to articulate their feelings, modeling healthy friendships themselves, and creating spaces where emotional expression is celebrated, not minimized.

The goal is to redefine strength for the next generation, framing connection not as a weakness but as a fundamental component of a healthy, resilient life. By prioritizing these skills, adults can guide boys toward building the supportive relationships crucial for their development and well-being.
