For children with ADHD, reading can feel like a battle against a restless brain. The words on the page may blur together, or the mind might wander after just a few sentences. This is not a lack of effort or intelligence. It is a neurological difference that affects attention, working memory, and impulse control. A mother who is also a pharmacist recently shared her practical strategies for helping kids with ADHD improve their reading and comprehension.
One of her key tips is to break reading into short, timed sessions. Instead of asking a child to read for 30 minutes straight, try five to ten minutes with a clear goal. Use a timer. After each session, take a short break to move around. This works with the brain's natural need for novelty and movement.
Another approach is to use a "tracker" like a finger, a bookmark, or even a piece of paper to cover the lines below the one being read. This reduces visual clutter and helps the eyes stay on task. For comprehension, she suggests asking the child to summarize one paragraph at a time in their own words. If they cannot, go back and read it again together.
The environment matters too. A quiet, clutter-free space with minimal distractions can make a huge difference. Some children focus better with background white noise or instrumental music. The goal is not to force a neurotypical reading style but to adapt the process to how an ADHD brain works. Small adjustments, like using a fidget toy while listening to an audiobook, can also build confidence and reduce frustration over time.
