The creative team behind the animated film Hexed recently opened up about the personal experiences that shaped their story about a mother and daughter caught in a magical conflict. Directors Fawn Veerasunthorn and Jason Hand, along with writers Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, spoke about how the themes of family and transformation drove the project from its earliest stages.
Veerasunthorn explained that the idea of becoming more like your parents resonated deeply with her own life. She noted that many people spend their youth trying to separate themselves from their families, only to discover unexpected similarities later on. That emotional arc became the foundation for the film's central relationship.
Hand added that the magical elements in Hexed serve as a metaphor for the invisible forces that connect generations. The spells and enchantments are not just spectacle, he said. They represent the ways parents pass down habits, fears, and hopes without ever saying a word.
Bush and Ledoux Miller described long conversations about their own upbringings during the writing process. They wanted the mother character to feel real, not like a saint or a villain. The result is a story that treats both perspectives with care.
The filmmakers agreed that audiences often bring their own family histories to movies like this one. That shared recognition, they believe, is what gives animated stories their lasting power.
