Central Texas College highlights support for parenting students during urban institute site visit

Central Texas College has received a $250,000 grant aimed at strengthening resources for students who are balancing academics with raising children. The college highlighted this commitment during a recent site visit from the Urban Institute, a Washington D.C.-based research organization focused on social and economic policy.

The funding will be used to expand services that address the unique challenges faced by parenting students, such as childcare access, flexible scheduling, and family-friendly campus spaces. College officials noted that these students often face higher dropout rates due to competing responsibilities, and the grant is intended to help close that gap.

During the visit, Urban Institute representatives toured campus facilities and met with student parents to discuss their experiences. The feedback gathered will inform both the college's program development and broader research on how institutions can better support nontraditional students.

Central Texas College serves a diverse population, including many military-affiliated and adult learners. Administrators say the grant will allow them to pilot new initiatives, such as emergency childcare subsidies and peer support networks, with the goal of improving retention and graduation rates among parenting students. The college plans to share its findings with other institutions facing similar challenges.
