I cannot allow HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s deeply troubling and racist 2024 comments about the so-called “re-parenting” of Black children to pass without scrutiny. When these remarks first surfaced, I did not hear them in real time, but upon review, they demand a clear and forceful response.
Kennedy’s framing suggests that Black families are somehow deficient in raising their own children, requiring external intervention to “correct” parenting practices. This narrative is not only false but dangerously rooted in centuries of racist ideology that has pathologized Black families. From the era of slavery, when families were torn apart, to the modern-day child welfare system that disproportionately removes Black children from their homes, this “re-parenting” rhetoric echoes the same paternalistic and dehumanizing logic.
Black parents have raised resilient, brilliant, and successful children despite systemic barriers, not because of outside “saving.” The assumption that a government official—especially one with Kennedy’s controversial history—should dictate how Black families nurture their children is an insult to the strength and wisdom within these communities. Rather than imposing top-down solutions, we should be addressing the root causes of inequality: poverty, lack of access to quality education, healthcare disparities, and systemic racism.
Kennedy’s comments reveal a fundamental misunderstanding of Black family dynamics and a disregard for the autonomy of Black parents. We must reject any policy or rhetoric that treats Black children as projects to be fixed rather than as whole individuals deserving of respect and support within their own cultural context. The conversation should shift from “re-parenting” to empowering families with resources and respect.
