5 Words That Changed My Parenting Forever

5 Words That Changed My Parenting Forever

For years, I thought my daughter's tantrums were about defiance. She would scream, throw toys, and collapse on the floor over something as small as a broken cracker. I tried time-outs, stern lectures, and walking away. Nothing worked. I felt like a failure, and she seemed to feel unheard.

Then a therapist said five words that rewired my entire approach: "She is screaming to be heard."

It sounds simple, but it hit me like a freight train. I had been treating her behavior as an attack on my authority. In reality, it was a desperate signal. She lacked the words to say, "I am overwhelmed," or "I need your help." So her body did the shouting for her.

That phrase changed how I react. Now, when she loses control, I stop trying to fix the situation or win the argument. Instead, I get down on her level and say, "I am listening. I see you are upset." The meltdowns did not vanish overnight, but they shortened. More importantly, she started coming to me for comfort instead of hiding in her room.

Those five words taught me that parenting is not about controlling behavior. It is about translating it. Every scream, every stomp, every slammed door is a message. My job is not to silence the noise, but to finally hear what it is saying.
